Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp double-acting baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees C.
  2. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl with fork.
  3. With pastry blender or 2 knives, cut shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; add buttermilk.
  4. Mix, quickly, JUST until mixture forms soft dough that leaves side of bowl.
  5. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface, knead about 6 strokes to mix thoroughly.
  6. Use a biscuit cutter, using a straight downward motion, w/o twisting.
  7. Press dough trimmings together and cut, to use all the dough.
  8. Place them all on a non greased baking pan.
  9. Bake 12-15 minutes, or until golden.
